About K12Chemistry

K12Chemistry is a learning resource for middle and high school chemistry. It connects observations, particle models, notation, measurements, and evidence so that students can check how an explanation was built.

Scope

The six lessons move from matter and measurement through atomic structure, bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, and solutions, acids, and bases. Each lesson states assumptions, shows worked reasoning where appropriate, and includes practice answers. The Chemistry cheat sheet gathers selected constants, formulas, ions, and element data for lookup.

The pages can support classroom discussion, homework review, or independent study. They do not replace a teacher’s judgment, local curriculum, or supervised laboratory instruction.

Sources and scientific care

Links near relevant topics point to established references including OpenStax Chemistry 2e, the American Chemical Society, IUPAC terminology, and NIST data. Wording and examples on this site are original and adapted for accessible study. Values depend on definitions, conditions, and rounding; the pages identify introductory approximations and units where they matter.

When a precise value, current convention, or advanced model matters, use the linked primary source and its stated conditions.

Models have boundaries

Particle diagrams, Lewis structures, ionic lattices, acid-base descriptions, and simple energy language highlight useful relationships while leaving out detail. A diagram is not a photograph of a molecule, a Lewis structure does not predict every shape or reaction, and an introductory pH calculation assumes dilute aqueous behavior under stated conditions.

Good scientific habit: Ask what a model explains, what evidence supports it, and where it stops being adequate.

A practical study routine

  1. Read the objectives and prerequisite links before starting.
  2. Keep definitions, units, particle sketches, and questions in one notebook.
  3. Attempt each practice question before opening its answer.
  4. Check arithmetic by estimating the size of the result and carrying units through each step.
  5. Follow the lab safety guidance and do not perform an investigation without appropriate adult supervision.
